To Catch A Thief (1955)
In a story of romance and intrigue on the Riviera with Grace Kelly as the leading lady, great costume is not surprising. Adding Edith Head as the costume designer into the equation, and beautiful outfits are created. The ice blue chiffon gown and the most elegant of cream dresses are some of Grace Kelly's most memorable outfits. Plus, Cary Grant proved to be a perfect accessory... arm candy at its best.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
The impact that this film has had on fashion is truly remarkable. When you envision Audrey Hepburn, it is usually in the trademark black gown, rows of pearls and oversized sunglasses. I have lost count of how many times I have watched this film, but every time I am still captivated by this opening scene. The wonderful costume department including Hubert de Givenchy and Edith Head, changed many perceptions of the importance of fashion in film narratives.

The Duchess (2008)
I have a mental list entitled Fabulous & Fashionable Ladies of Times Past, this list includes Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Her life was fascinating and she is often heralded as being a leader of fashion in 18th Century Britain. The costumes in the film were designed by Michael O'Connor, and help to illustrate Georgiana's style and influence. If you've read her biography by Amanda Foreman, then this film offers lovely visual inspiration.

Cleopatra (1963)
This film was epic in every sense of the word. An Academy Award for Best Costume Design, a $44 million budget and Elizabeth Taylor's 65 costume changes are just a few indications of this film's appeal. This clip shows the film in all of its extravagant glory. Costume designers Vittorio Nino Novarese and Renie, created iconic fashion moments. The costume and make-up of Cleopatra have been very influential before and after this film. With Elizabeth Taylor as the star, she kept Egyptian style firmly in our minds.

The Seven Year Itch (1955)
I have mentioned that some of the costumes worn in films have reached icon status. The true definition of this can be seen here, with this dress. Marilyn Monroe's ivory dress in this scene is the first image that comes to mind when I think of the relationship between fashion and film. The dress was designed by William Travilla and sold for around $5.6 million at auction last year. Everyone has seen the famous image of Marilyn wearing the wind-blown dress. This scene shows why this became one of the most iconic moments in film history.
